How can you improve the health of the entire city? The same question was encountered in a flatwood area in Lancashire.
Flatwood is a port that was formerly used for fishing. It is a place where illnesses have surrounded humans and people are being killed in infancy. So in 2016, a local doctor tried to change the situation and started helping people to take care of their health. Then there was a step called 'Healthy Flatwood' which included Over time there have been a lot of ups and downs.
The initial excitement in this work was soon replaced by the realization that a lasting improvement in people's physical and mental health can be a major task, but there are now signs that things can change for the better.
What was making Flatwood sick?
At the end of the Field Peninsula north of the Flatwood Black Pool is a small town that once was a prosperous area. There has been a rush of money here, but most of the economy depends on the fishing industry here, and when it collapsed in the 1970s and 1980s, it affected the local economy as well.
The economy was hit in the late 90's when a chemical manufacturing company ICI was shut down. The city has a strong link between unemployment, poverty, lack of opportunities and poor health. And it is certain that the rates of cancer, heart and lung disease had increased in the Flatwood population. Along with the increase in alcohol and drug addicts, there was a significant increase in psychological health problems.
Dr Mark Spencer says: 'I felt the city was in the throes of a tragic end to the fishing industry and it was as if someone had died in a family. And the feeling of loss, hopelessness and helplessness that lasted everyone for maybe 40 years in the process of mourning. ”Dr. Spencer knew that his patients were more sick and sick than other wealthier areas of the country. Were dying early The average age of Fleetwood residents was several years lower than that of nearby villages and towns. And something needed to be done to cope with this situation.
The solution to the deteriorating health crisis
By the spring of 2016, Dr. Spencer had seen a lot. They were tired of having to ointment patients and after a few weeks they returned to the ointment again. They think the only way to solve Fleetwood's health problems was to get him where he started. And that was not enough to tell the residents what needed to be done, but they needed to overcome their health issues and help and encourage them to improve their lives by doing so.
It was for residents to decide how they could improve their health and what would affect them or not. That was the key to the move, known as Healthy Flatwood, a movement that gave people the opportunity to empower themselves and make positive decisions about their health care.
It began in the summer of 2016 with a meeting of locals who sought to bring together various pre-existing groups in the city, including local football clubs, Fleetwood residents associations, gardening clubs, sports groups. Went to those who helped those who tried to beat the drug addiction. Prior to the Healthy Flatwood program, there was a painting therapy group, yoga classes and a singers program in which people participated in large numbers.
Pauline Kennedy regularly participated in the singers' program. He had a lung disease and was advised to do something to help alleviate the symptoms of his illness but was already involved in a healthy flatwood program. When they realized that they needed to make some changes in their lives. He says, 'My obesity was the extent of the illness. I had a number of medical problems that were causing me problems.
I was 60 and needed care all the time. And honestly, I was ready to die. I just thought it was just that I was alive until the day I was raised, but the more I started going, the more I started thinking that if you were in a meeting, It's on the healthy side and it's a shock if you're the fattest person in the room. I went home and cried a lot. I thought and realized that it was time to do something and I took responsibility for my health. '
Palin has lost a lot of weight now. They have restored their confidence and are facing many problems. "I say that the Healthy Flatwood program has changed my life, but on the contrary it has empowered me to change my life and I will always be grateful for it," he says.
Alternatives to medicines
One of the most important strategies to help people like Palin is what's known as the "social version". Dr. Spencer was fed up with giving his patients medicines, especially for their mental health. They were looking for an alternative that would help build trust, reduce anxiety and give people a purpose in life. So instead of medication, patients realize that they should go to a local gym or engage in local gardening. Similarly, Chris Eyre found himself punching a punching bag in a boxing class Thursday morning.
This class was created for Christie's like drug addicts who had to resume their lives after being admitted to the hospital. He says, 'I was imprisoned in my house, doing nothing but excessive drinking and smoking. And just watching TV all day. ”In a horrific incident when he had an accident due to a sudden disorder in his blood pressure, he was taken to the emergency department of Black Pool Victoria Hospital.
Chris was lucky because his conversations with a specialist nurse on alcohol addiction helped change his life. Now they are boxing and are part of the abstinence groups. Chris says that if he didn't make changes in his life, he would probably 'be in the hospital again due to high blood pressure and he would have to go to the hospital again and again until it had taken his life.' What I am doing now, they have made my life better. Maybe not as much as my dreams but in such a positive way that I don't want to go back to where I was before. I am happy with my life now and it is like that.
Was this useful?
These are still early days. Changing the health of the entire community, where poor health has taken root, is the work of generations, but there are encouraging signs that things are starting to improve. For example, like Chris, there has been a clear decline in the number of accidents and emergency departments of Fleetwood residents at Black Pool Hospital. The number has decreased by 11.5 percent in one year. The number of people admitted to the hospital in emergency has also decreased by 9.4 percent. The experience at Flatwood is gaining nationwide attention. After all, there are a number of areas that face problems just like Lancashire City.
"Because people live longer with more complex illnesses, we don't just give people more medication and more inspection history," says Anna Charles, a senior policy adviser at the Kings Fund Health Charity. Can stay We don't have that much money and not enough staff, so finding different ways to deal with these problems was a difficult task, otherwise the National Health Services would end. '
Changing the health of an entire city is not an easy task and still requires a long time, but what is happening in Flatwood is an example for other areas of the UK that are facing similar problems. (Courtesy of express)
