Why are Indian soldiers doing Suicides?

New Delhi: (Daily World) 1110 Indian soldiers committed suicide, including Air Force and Navy personnel, from 2010 to 2019. According to the Indian Ministry of Defense, during the last few years, several steps have been taken to reduce the tensions among the troops, including counseling, yoga as well as food, clothing, housing and holiday policy complaints. However, further steps need to be taken.

According to the Indian newspaper, from 2010 to 2019, there were 895 reports in the evil army of India, 185 in the air force and 32 in the Navy. Duty soldiers have a global problem while under stress. US forces are also trying to tackle the problem of rising suicides, where 541 suicide cases were reported in 2018. The suicide rate in the US forces this year was 24.8 per million, up from 21.9 in 2017.

The suicide rate in the Indian Army is 16.5 per lakh, which is alarming because the soldiers do not face extreme poverty, unemployment and other problems including farming problems which are the main reasons for the trend of suicide among Indian citizens. However, conditions such as prolonged deployment on the insecure border of Pakistan, the uprising in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeastern states adversely affect the physical and mental health of the soldiers. They suffer severe stress due to family issues, including property disputes and financial and marital problems.

A senior officer said that contact with the family for 24 hours because of a mobile phone was causing tensions in the military. Police and local authorities often ignore complaints from soldiers and their families. The first battalion commander could have solved the personal problems of the soldiers by talking to the civil administration, but that's not the case anymore. According to a study by the Defense Institute of Psychological Research, humiliation and harassment by senior officers often lead to suicide among soldiers.

According to the Ministry of Defense, according to various studies since 2006, domestic and personal problems, marital differences, pressures, health and financial problems are the main reasons for suicide among soldiers.
